This Issue…

This month we pay tribute to the late Jack Myers.  Read memories from current and past students and colleagues, plus work from some of his students of the past.  Jack was a professor of poetry at SMU for thirty four years, and a well respected figure in the literary world.  Jack was named the Poet Laureate for the State of Texas in 2003.  He was co-founder of the Writer’s Garret, a non-profit literary center in Dallas, as well as the Writers’ Community and Mentorship Program.  Jack was the author of 17 books of and about poetry, and he won writing awards from the National Poetry Series, The National Endowment for the Arts, The National Poetry Series, and The Texas Institute of Letters, among others. His writing seeks to discover the extraordinary within the ordinary by fusing Eastern influences to Jungian psychology while being grounded by ironic humor and a working class sensibility.

Also featured are poems, fiction, and photography from SMU student artists.  Lauren Smart discusses the difficulty of taking the first step in this month’s Reflections column, and the Creative Writing Program’s Spring 2010 Calendar of Events is now available.

Now accepting applications for Assistant Editor!

The Assistant Editor position includes copy editing for grammatical, syntactical, and spelling mistakes; working with the Managing Editor to ensure the Calendar of Events is up to date (this includes ALL art related events at SMU and in Dallas, as well as contest deadlines, Writers Group meetings and topics, and extra “fun” activities); and encouraging submissions and subscriptions to Espejo.  Though an English major or minor is not a requirement, a presence in the SMU Creative Writing community is a must.  The time requirements for actual “sit-down” work are minimal, however candidates will need to be on continual alert for events as mentioned above, and will also need to be comfortable talking about Espejo and the Writers Group.  If you are interested, please contact Lauren Smart, Managing Editor, at lsmart@smu.edu.
